"Interlinked Crises?"

Ankündigung:

The years 2010/2011 mark the simultaneous emergence of two profound crises: one taking place in the Northern rim, the other in the Southern rim of the Mediterranean area. The European crisis and the Arab upheavals started at the same time and concern countries and societies on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea. Do these political turbulences have a common historic and political breeding ground or is it pure coincidence that citizens of the individual countries went only in short intervals of time on the streets to express their displeasure? Are these crises interlinked? Where can we detect mutual interactions? The aim of this event is to discuss possible interdependency between the European political and economic crisis, and the upheavals in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. Inputs: Prof. Dr. Alfred Tovias (Hebrew University of Jerusalem), Judy Dempsey (Senior Associate at Carnegie Europe), Prof. Dr. Stephan Stetter (Universität der Bundeswehr München), Anas Alabbadi (Political Scientist). Moderation: Dr. Isabel Schäfer (Mediterranean Institute Berlin). Discussion in English language.
